A straightforward approach of one of the toughest question.
(And yes, I've illustrate this article with what I consider as one of the most modern media today: The Gentlewoman).
1st. focus on readers revenues
Once you manage to frame narratives people will actually pay for, every others income streams and even those you wouldn’t have thought about will open.
I completely disagree with the common idea that people aren’t willing to pay for news anymore. Just look at recent ventures:
- The Gentlewoman, a print magazine based in London has 100k circulation/ issue + the club has more than 35k members 10 years after its founding.
- The Athletic, a sport-focused digital media, is going at an incredible pace. They recently passed 600k subscribers, in less than 4 years.
- Business of Fashion just raise a Series B and is doing absolutely great with 35k subscribers + 650k subscribers to its newsletter.
